"How-to" Style the Apple Body Type | Amazon Summer Dress Review

Updated: May 20

I was already a mother when my sister said to me, “Sis, you can’t wear low rider jeans. They aren’t for your body type.” Don’t laugh, or think I’m joking but I looked at her confused. “So jeans aren’t just jeans?” I didn’t know anything about body types or jean styles. If I did, I wouldn't have picked that specific pair to wear out in public. I never, ever paid attention to different body types because I never cared.

She was the fashionista of the family - the style guru. That day I sucked it up because we were already at the bowling alley celebrating my daughters birthday. I wasn't about to turn around and go home.

Yet, all along I was thinking, “So you mean to tell me I ain‘t cute in my dark blue jeans & flattering white top?”

My daughter’s birthday party was pre-internet search. Pre-Google everything. In fact, spending money on style magazines, watching music videos and commercials were the only way to study the latest fashions and styles. OR, your *ss had better be born with a sense of fashion like my big sister. I was outta luck - I had zero interest in music videos, commercials, magazines OR fashion. Like now, I just want to get up, get cleaned and GO!

But as time progressed, it hit me hard. I WANTED TO LOOK GOOD! And I loved myself and my body. The best course of action was to make sure my apple shaped body type was dressed to perfection. The first thing I did, once I got my Gateway Computer (HEHEHEHE), was research “how to style the apple body.” I needed to know which celebrities had my body type because they were dressed by the best Style Gods in Hollywood. Terms like A-line, high waist and empire were mentioned in almost every article. The learning curve began.

Apple shapes are usually recognizable by:

  1. larger mid-sections

  2. bigger boobs

  3. No defined waistline

  4. flatter bum

  5. little/no hips

  6. nice legs

  7. broad shoulders (sometimes)

In the picture below, the apple shape is shown by a square.

Tia is a beautiful human. She embodies styling up the apple shape. Especially now, with her very stylish presence on TikTok, she gives her fans a sneak peek of her many fashion items. She doesn’t miss a beat with the styles she wears. I’m like, oh yeah, that looked good on Tia, let me try it!

Octavia Spencer

I stan some Octavia. Her acting skills are impeccable. She is another apple body beauty. As you do more research about round shape body types, often times you will see the shoulders are bare or exposed. This is a nice technique to use because it brings attention to a sexier part of the body. It makes the eyes drift away from the tummy area.

Angelina Jolie

Stunning woman. What more can I say about these impeccable actors? Angelina‘s wax figure is utilizing two apple body dressing techniques in one dress. Like Octavia, she is baring shoulders - lifting the eyes above her midsection. Then she also has ruching in the front and hip area giving the illusion to wider hips. We do what we gotta do because WE LOOK GOOD, TOO!

And then there’s me:

It took years to learn to dress for my body type - BUT I DID IT! Like the beauties above, wearing my shoulders out is one of my favorite things to do. Especially after giving birth to three children my midsection never recovered. It’s important to me that I draw eyes away from my problem areas and onto something prettier, like my smile.

But then here comes the next worry.

Of course that’s not easy for everyone. I found this beautiful peplum top at Saks Fifth Ave. I want it BAD! Because the shirt is BAD!!!! Yet, there‘s no way I can afford it.

Once your heart is set on a piece, the next step is to shop for a similar item within your budget. I’m a flight attendant. Brick and Mortar shopping is not an easy task for someone like me who's always on the go. So online shopping it is. From hotel room, to hotel room, I surf the web shopping for affordable pieces because I love my apply body. Hell why shouldn't I?

White Summer Dress for Apple Shaped Women
Tisha Starr Amazon Summer Dress

This cute little Amazon dress is affordable, comfortable, and stylish. The dress has deep pockets and an attached slip. Although the dress is sheer, the slips prevents the goodies from showing through. It flows like linen but it’s cotton. Definitely a nice cool dress to sport to any roof-top bar or all white summer bash. Any shaped woman will look good in the dress (given they purchase the right size). But an apple shaped woman benefits greatly from having one exposed shoulder and loose fitting bottom. The top is ribbed so it hugs the twins - another fabulous part of our goddess body type.

So to all my ROUND shape body gals and girls, this is a dress you will stand out in.

It’s all about the accessories. If you have an apple shaped body:

  • Invest in wide belts. I chose to go with a clear belt with bold colors for this look.

  • Bold earrings are fun and they draw more attention to the neck area (avoid this trick if your neck is short)

  • Try colorful bottoms - it takes the eyes downward instead of directly at your problem area

  • Do not invest in lots of clingy tops. Clingy shirts/blouses only enhance the roundness of your shape

  • Highlight your goodies - if you have pretty legs, show them. Nice shoulders, bare them. Perky, itty bitties - strut your stuff

  • Don’t wear turtle necks and high necked tops - That’s a no, no!

  • Buy blazers, Tunics and shawls - pretty ones THAT IS!

There’s nothing I hate more is when people dress the apple body like old grandma’s on their last leg of life. Honey, we look good - don’t go covering us up with sheets and blankets. GTFOH… with that!

We deserve to Get fancy.

Love you - and everything about you.
